Low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) is a major risk factor for allergy, upper fermenting gut and infection. It is also a cause of malabsorption. It is often misdiagnosed as hyperchlorhydria (i.e. too much acid) and acid suppressing drugs are prescribed. This makes the whole situation so much worse. See Heartburn - at last I have sussed out why this is such a common problem!
